At the Modern Art Dining Table – Ceramics of the Weimar Republic at Museum Ariana

Between 1919 and 1933, and for the first time in its history, Germany was under a republican regime: the “Weimar Republic”. The world was then experiencing a period of exceptional artistic ferment, led by the avant-gardes. These years coincided with the rise of modern art and abstraction, from Russian Suprematism and Constructivism to the De Stijl movement in the Netherlands and the German Bauhaus school.
The Musée Ariana is presenting ceramics from a private collection, found mainly in flea markets in the Geneva region from the 1970s onwards. These pieces, generally decorated with airbrush designs, are illustrative of utilitarian ware while reflecting, at the same time, a highly innovative form of artistic expression.
